During this pandemic, one really annoying thing I’ve discovered with mandatory mask wearing is the induced acne it so kindly leaves us behind with!! If you are a long term acne sufferer like myself, this will not do your skin any favours – yay new breakouts in addition to the already very consistent ones I encounter. And anecdotally, I’ve heard from people who have never suffered from break outs now getting clumps of spots around the chin and cheek area – exactly where the mask sits! This type of acne caused / intensified by mask-wearing is now referred to as ”maskne”.
There are some tips you can follow in order to minimise maskne, but in addition I have found the perfect product to use overnight to keep the break outs at bay. The Body Shop Tea Tree Anti-Imperfection Night Mask works absolute wonders on skin. Now we know that Tea Tree Oil is a wonderful natural antibacterial agent often used to treat acne, but what I really like about this mask is that it isn’t harsh on the skin at all. In the past some tea tree face washes have irritated my skin due to being harsh, leaving my skin red and sore.
However, the best thing about this mask is that it has a lovely gel-like consistency that you can apply right before you sleep, and wake up with your spots dried up and your skin looking much clearer! It’s perfect for those who have a busy lifestyle, and perhaps can’t commit to a various-step skincare regime day and night. This overnight mask is a perfect, lazy solution to beating any type of acne flareup – and in particular right now, maskne breakouts.
In addition to using this mask, you can follow the following tips to keep maskne at bay;
Make sure you always wear clean masks, the reusable ones are much more hygienic and economically viable. The single use masks are fine if you ensure you throw them away after each use – but we all know when you are busy and forget your mask you reach for the first one you find!
2. Clean after use
After you’ve had your mask on for some time, especially longer periods of time, make sure you wash your face right away. Within the mask being so close to our mouths, and the condensation from breathing within that confined space is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria.
3. Skincare routine
Exfoliate once per week, and cleanse, tone and moisturise day and night. Keeping your skin clean and happy is going to help keep your skin balanced.
